Green Sea Turtle
6″ x 12″
Oil on Wood
I painted this while I was working at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium where this green sea turtle lived. Once upon a time, he lived in the Atlantic Ocean, but was caught off guard when the waters off the Carolinas became too cold. He beached himself and was stunned by the cold. He was eventually deemed un-releasable and found his way to Omaha.
I remember being a kid growing up in Nebraska and going to this zoo. I had never seen an ocean. They seemed like a million miles away. But seeing a turtle like this swim inches from my face that was always pressed up against the glass, it made the world seem smaller. Eventually, I would swim alongside turtles like this, and help teach others how awesome these animals are and how they could help save them from extinction.
